“Need for Speed NITRO is a brand new arcade racer built exclusively from the ground up for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS here at EA Montreal. I am Gil Rimmer Art Director for NFS NITRO Wii and I would like to tell you about NITRO and its unique visual art style. Although NITRO draws from a long and rich heritage of NFS games, it still carves out a unique position within the racing genre and the NFS Franchise.“As an Art Director there is a lot to consider, first and foremost, Need for Speed NITRO is a racing game, the art plays a big role, but it is a supporting role that enhances the racing experience.
As a testament to our pioneering spirit, NITRO departs from the NFS standard of racing in North America. All of the races take place in exotic cities with emerging Street racing cultures. Cites such as Rio de Janerio, Cairo, Madrid, Singapore and Dubai give Nitro a distinctive look at the frontier of the racing world.
Next we focused on the metagame concept, you start poor, a young up and comer from Rio eager to make a claim in this global scene. As your career progresses, you gain fame, better cars and access to more exclusive locations. This concept had an impact on the visual style as we go from a grungier dirty feel in Rio to the cleaner polished tracks of Dubai.
In addition, Need for Speed NITRO has a breakthrough visual style based around the concept of “OWN IT” where you “tag” the city you race in as you take the lead in the race! By fusing the underground racing scene with the world of Graffiti we have achieved some fresh game play that heightens the racing experience and transforms the racing world.
We wanted the tagging to “pop” so therefore treated the environments as a “blank canvas” waiting to be owned. This idea is implemented by keeping the background limited in color and saturation allowing room for your vibrantly created tags and cars to be noticed.
The biggest challenge as always comes from balancing the technology and the vision for the game. Our game runs at a smoking hot 60 fps! Critical to delivering the sense of control we envisioned for the cars. When you drive FAST the sense of speed is incredible!
We created big and ambitious tracks, each still populated with large amounts of buildings and tons of smackables especially when driving through the narrow streets of Madrid, the dense markets in Cairo and the historic Chinatown in Singapore.
We pushed the Wii to achieve as much of what we set out to do and more. We have created a bold look that harmonizes the Gameplay, Cities and the Cars, which are a stunning visual breakthrough for the Wii!
NFS has a long standing tradition for incredible looking cars, fast paced racing and an edgy street scene. Need for Speed NITRO is an Arcade game echoing the accessibility and ease of use which is iconic to the Wii, while still celebrating and embodying the core of the NFS experience, fulfilling the player’s Need for Speed.
This should give you guys a good idea what we think about when we sit down to visually create a game, it’s incredibly challenging and with the amazing team here at EAM (EA Montreal) it’s been a true wild ride!”
